Graveyard Keeper 2 zombie workers

Zombie workers that will not move are the demo’s most common wall, and it is almost never a bug. Three gates have to be passed: the right tool, non-zero inspiration, and a hauler to feed him. Five testing videos cover the whole chain: where zombies come from, when they can rise, and how to make one actually produce.

Your first two zombies come from the story

The first pair is free, but you have to walk the chain: push the Dream Dust quest line, open the locked hatch in your home, descend into the dungeon, meet the Plague Doctor for the first time and clear the rubble in front of him. That unlocks the abandoned tower above your base.

The tower door needs your Inquisitor medallion plus the combination you are carrying. Inside, study water and blood at the study table (neither costs faith), brew Dream Dust at the flask table and hand it over. The doctor verifies it and gives you the two zombies from his own room — your first workforce.

    • Push the Dream Dust line
    • Hatch → dungeon → Plague Doctor
    • Medallion opens the tower, water + blood → Dream Dust
    • Hand it over for two zombies

Zombie three and beyond: raise your own

For more workers, unlock Reanimation in the Anatomy & Alchemy branch of the tech tree, then open the sealed door on the left side of the morgue and build Resurrection Table I inside.

The routine: put a body on the table, attach a collar, make sure Reanimation Liquid is loaded, press prepare — and wait for the right day.

    • Unlock Reanimation tech
    • Morgue left door → resurrection room
    • Build Resurrection Table I
    • Body + collar + liquid = prepared
  3. 1:53–2:06 · video

The day gate: wait for the Snake day

A prepared body does not get up on its own: only the Snake day brings lightning, and that is the only day the resurrect option appears. The earlier start-adventure video calls the same day “green day” — two names, one stormy day.

So resurrection is scheduled, not instant: prepare the body, then wait for the day. Miss it and you wait another cycle.

    • Snake day / green day = lightning
    • Only then can you resurrect
    • Prepare first, then wait

A zombie that does not move: check the tool

The video calls this out explicitly — after you put a zombie at a station it may simply not work, and the cause is almost always a missing or wrong tool. Chopping logs needs an axe, and his overall mastery has to reach the job’s requirement.

A zombie is not a self-running machine; it is a worker that has to be equipped, and the tool decides which family of jobs it can take.

    • Idle zombie = check the tool first
    • Tool must match the job family
    • Mastery must meet the requirement
  5. 0:00–1:04 · video

Measured: zero mastery means zero work

A second short guide films the whole failure: with zero work mastery the zombie sits at the station and nothing happens; hand him an axe for 1 mastery and he can make wooden planks.

Swapping tools swaps the stat: the same zombie with a different tool has a different mastery family and therefore a different set of jobs (the video switches him from planks to nails).

    • Zero mastery = nothing at all
    • An axe gives 1 mastery and unlocks planks
    • Different tool, different job family
  6. 0:00–1:06 · video

Make the line run itself: supplier + hauler + crafter

Three pieces make zombies work without you: a zombie supplier station, a storage container, and a zombie assigned to the station as a hauler.

The loop: the hauler takes material from the chest, hands it to the crafter at the bench, the crafter finishes, and the hauler carries the product back. Without the hauler the crafter just sits there waiting, which looks exactly like a bug.

    • Build the zombie supplier station
    • Add one storage chest
    • Assign a hauler zombie
    • The crafter still needs its tool
  7. 2:47–3:40 · video

Zombies have their own inspiration — and tools grant it

The systems video goes one level deeper: zombies carry inspiration like you do, and a zombie that starts at zero inspiration cannot be assigned to any work at all.

Tools are the fix, because tools provide inspiration points: an axe gives building inspiration, a shovel gives farming inspiration (the kitchen counts as farming). Quality matters too — a rusty axe provides 1, a bronze axe provides 2, so better tools unlock better jobs.

    • Zero inspiration = cannot be assigned
    • Tools grant inspiration points
    • Axe → building, shovel → farming incl. kitchen
    • Rusty axe 1, bronze axe 2
  8. 3:42–4:10 · video

    Inspiration grows by working

Once assigned, a zombie naturally gains more inspiration by doing that kind of work — so handing it a rusty axe today is how it becomes a late-game worker tomorrow.

That is the case for crafting tools early: the tool is the entry ticket, and the hours worked are the production.

    • Work the job, gain that inspiration
    • Even the worst tool is a ticket in
    • Better tools → advanced jobs
  9. 9:21–10:28 · video

Perk points are earned by pushing jobs

The second guide shows the other half of the perk system: workers carry their own perk points, and you earn them by going back into the job screen and pushing each individual job until the green point lands.

So a worker is not finished when he is assigned — he is levelled by repeatedly re-queuing the work you want him to specialise in.

    • Perk points are per worker
    • Push the individual job to earn them
    • Specialise by re-queuing
  10. 10:52–11:04 · video

Haulers roam — there is no porter route

One correction the second guide makes for returning players: the old game’s porter route is gone. A hauler is simply dropped anywhere in the area and then walks to whatever needs carrying.

That is why placing the supplier station and the chest sensibly matters more than drawing a path.

    • No porter routes
    • Haulers walk to the work
    • Placement beats pathing
  11. 4:23–4:42 · video

Perk slots come from red skulls

Check your workers from time to time and give them perks, because the more red skulls a worker has, the more perks he can carry — and the video calls that “really, really strong”.

So when you pick which body becomes a worker, red skulls are not just a pass/fail gate; they set the ceiling on how good that worker can become.

    • Revisit workers and add perks
    • Red skulls = perk slots
    • Body choice sets the worker’s ceiling
  12. 1:09–1:45 · video

    The supplier-station quirk: progress resets

One easily missed observation in the footage: after assigning a zombie to the supplier station, taking him off or reassigning him resets his progress at that station, so fixed roles beat constant reshuffling.

Practical version: lock the hauler and crafter roles, and only intervene when material or a tool is missing.

    • Supplier progress resets on reassignment
    • Fixed roles beat reshuffling
    • Intervene only when something is missing

The stations the line is built from

Every building the game’s own data files under zombie labour: the supplier station and its indoor variant, the supply porter, the porter stations at each site, and the quarry, mine and digger stands. The materials are the game’s own build requirements and the last column is the research that unlocks it.

What speeds the line up and what holds it back

The game puts buffs and debuffs on the zombies themselves, and the keeper has perks whose own text names zombies. Both are listed with the game’s wording.

Name Effect (the game’s own text)
God of the zombies buff You zombies work faster and you con use worse collars to create them.
Zombie Motivation buff Allied fighters' attack speed is increased.
Zombie Motivation II buff Allied fighters' attack speed is increased.

Where this comes from

Recreational Suffering / Wasting / enerkom / Larry Puss

Five videos: Recreational Suffering’s How to Get Zombies in Graveyard Keeper 2 Demo (2026-09-16, 80 cues) on acquisition and resurrection, Wasting (2026-09-16, 27 cues) and enerkom (2026-09-18, 25 cues) testing why a zombie stands still, Larry Puss’s tips video (2026-09-21, 389 cues) on inspiration and tools, plus MrFlameturtle’s zombie tips (325 cues) as an independent check. All five transcripts were read and checked.

Names follow the game’s data: Reanimation Liquid, the Bronze Zombie Collar, Resurrection Table I, the four axe tiers (Rusty, Bronze, Iron and Steel Axe) and the supplier-station building all follow the game’s own data. “Snake day” and “green day” are the videos’ own names — the in-game strings carry no day names, so both are kept and marked as synonyms.

MrFlameturtle — zombie tips (independent check)

A second guide (MrFlameturtle’s zombie tips, 325 cues) tests the same system on a save with five workers, and adds two facts: zombies have their own perk points, earned by repeatedly pushing individual jobs, and a hauler has no fixed route — you place him in the area and he walks to whatever needs carrying.

It independently reproduces the reset quirk: taking a worker off a station pops the job assignment with him.

The three tables: the release build’s own data

The three tables under the walkthrough are not video content — they are the release build’s own data: the buildings the game’s data lists under zombie labour (with their build materials and unlocking research), the zombie skills with the effect text the game shows, and the zombie buffs and debuffs plus the keeper perks whose text names zombies.

The numbers inside that effect text (for example “+2 when working with wood”) are the game’s own, not this page’s arithmetic, and the materials and research names come from the same data.

Data version: 1.004.2 · read 2026-09-23

Limits: all four videos are auto-captioned and every name was checked against the game’s strings. The supplier-station “progress resets” behaviour is observed independently in two videos; it is not present in the game’s data. The video chapters cover the demo build (1.002.4); the three tables below them are read from the release build (1.004.2).
